Outdoor Sauna Permit Requirements in Seattle: What Homeowners Need to Know

Cedar Sauna

Thinking about adding a sauna to your Seattle backyard? Before you order a barrel sauna kit or call a contractor, there’s one question you need to answer first: does your sauna require a building permit?

Most of what you’ll find online is vague on this — permit codes weren’t written with backyard saunas in mind, and the rules don’t always translate cleanly from one structure type to another. So rather than interpret the code ourselves and get it wrong, we emailed the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) directly and asked.

Here’s what they told us — and what it means for your project.

Straight From SDCI: How Seattle Treats Sauna Permits

Jose Franco at the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections gave us a clear answer: Seattle treats an outdoor sauna like any other accessory structure — specifically, it follows the same permit criteria as a backyard shed.

Under Seattle’s rules, you don’t need a permit if the structure’s total roof footprint is 120 square feet or less, and it’s not in or near an environmentally critical area such as a steep slope, wetland, or flood-prone area. Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections

So if your sauna’s footprint is under 120 square feet — which covers most manufactured barrel and cabin-style units — no building permit is required from SDCI.

If the footprint exceeds 120 square feet, or your property is near an environmentally critical area, a permit will be required.

Electrical is a separate question. Even if your sauna doesn’t trigger a building permit, the electrical hookup likely will. Electrical permits in Seattle run through Seattle City Light and/or SDCI depending on scope. This is something your electrician should be pulling — if they’re not mentioning it, ask.

What Kind of Permit Do You Need If You’re Over 120 Sq Ft?

Simpler additions may qualify for a subject-to-field-inspection permit, which moves faster than a full building permit review. Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections A larger manufactured sauna on a concrete pad may fall into this category — but you’ll want to confirm with SDCI based on your specific site and setup.

More complex builds — a custom sauna, a sauna integrated into a deck, or anything with significant structural work — will typically require a full construction permit.

If your property is near a steep slope, wetland, or other environmentally critical area, additional ECA review may be layered on top of the standard permit process.

Sauna on a Deck in Seattle?

If you want to place a sauna on an existing deck, the deck has to be able to support the weight. Saunas typically weigh anywhere from 800 to 3,000+ pounds depending on size and construction. Depending on the scope of the project, SDCI may require documentation from a licensed design professional confirming the deck’s load capacity before issuing a permit.

This is something we assess as part of our design process. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it needs to be part of the plan from day one — not discovered after the fact.

Why We Went to the Source

Permit codes are written broadly, and they don’t always spell out exactly how a specific structure type — like a sauna — gets classified. We’ve seen homeowners and even other contractors make assumptions that turned out to be wrong, leading to unpermitted work that creates problems at resale or with insurance.

Going directly to SDCI and getting a written response takes the guesswork out of it. When we take on a project, that’s the standard we hold ourselves to — we find out exactly what’s required before we build, not after.

What Alki Handles for You

Navigating SDCI permitting is part of our process. When we design outdoor spaces that include saunas, we identify what permits are required, coordinate with the appropriate agencies, and manage the application — so you’re not spending hours on hold with the city.
